Redhill, Surrey

Work context/Areas of interest and specialism:

NHS, independent and voluntary sector experience in UK and New Zealand:

  • 25+ years of clinical experience: neurorehabilitation/acquired conditions/neurodisability; acute/inpatient rehabilitation and community – adults and children. My clinical area of interest is ABI with particular focus on CCD and younger adults
  • 20+ years providing 1:1 and group supervision to SLTs and members of the MDT at a range of experience levels
  • 15+ years in leadership roles in NHS and voluntary sector – operational and strategic leadership at senior level. Experience of both SLT & MDT leadership
  • Experience of programme and project management, service evaluation, transformation and re-design, new service design and development

Ongoing CPD particularly within areas of ABI, clinical and professional supervision, project management, and leadership development to advanced level

I particularly enjoy developing supervision relationships with individuals around the areas of:

  • ABI rehabilitation and formulation
  • Professional identity, role and growth
  • Leadership development for those transitioning into leadership roles
  • Leadership development for those already in leadership roles, including:
    • Compassionate leadership
    • Team development and teamwork, including MDT team leadership
    • Cross sector working and collaboration; working within systems
  • Project and programme management/leadership (experience of project management frameworks)
  • Experiencing and adapting to change; change management

I have been fortunate to have access to strong supervision throughout the majority of my speech and language therapy life. The high points have been when I have had a solid relationship with my supervisor; when the supervisor has been someone I have trusted and respected, and whom I have felt comfortable and confident to share my thoughts, my reflections, my ambitions and importantly for me, my ‘questioning myself’ moments with. This has enabled me to develop my role and identity as a therapist, in leadership roles and as a supervisor, and has been key in supporting my career development and career choices.

I have developed my supervision practice through regular training, including intandem supervision courses levels 1-3, coaching and through supervision of supervision.

I have over 20 years’ experience of providing supervision to SLTs and members of the MDT at a range of experience levels, in 1:1 and group supervision settings.

I am Chair of ABICEN and sit on an advisory panel for a national children’s ABI charity.

I am a member of RCSLT and HCPC.

Description of supervision approach:

My supervision approach has been shaped by the positive supervision experiences I’ve had and continue to receive. My aim for supervision is to provide a safe, supportive, and trusting space where individuals can take time for themselves, and reflect, explore and work through the successes and challenges of their professional practice as well as look to their future development and ambitions.

I encourage supervisees to bring to the session their current priorities they want to focus on and see my role as that of facilitator, using active listening, discussion, and challenge to support learning and understanding of issues, encourage professional identity and growth, and importantly, enabling supervisees to feel nurtured and hopefully re-energised. Where appropriate, I draw on and share my own clinical and leadership knowledge and experience to support discussion and will signpost to alternative sources of support and learning when required.
