Experience/training/membership:

I have been fortunate to have access to strong supervision throughout the majority of my speech and language therapy life. The high points have been when I have had a solid relationship with my supervisor; when the supervisor has been someone I have trusted and respected, and whom I have felt comfortable and confident to share my thoughts, my reflections, my ambitions and importantly for me, my ‘questioning myself’ moments with. This has enabled me to develop my role and identity as a therapist, in leadership roles and as a supervisor, and has been key in supporting my career development and career choices.

I have developed my supervision practice through regular training, including intandem supervision courses levels 1-3, coaching and through supervision of supervision.

I have over 20 years’ experience of providing supervision to SLTs and members of the MDT at a range of experience levels, in 1:1 and group supervision settings.

I am Chair of ABICEN and sit on an advisory panel for a national children’s ABI charity.

I am a member of RCSLT and HCPC.

Description of supervision approach:

My supervision approach has been shaped by the positive supervision experiences I’ve had and continue to receive. My aim for supervision is to provide a safe, supportive, and trusting space where individuals can take time for themselves, and reflect, explore and work through the successes and challenges of their professional practice as well as look to their future development and ambitions.

I encourage supervisees to bring to the session their current priorities they want to focus on and see my role as that of facilitator, using active listening, discussion, and challenge to support learning and understanding of issues, encourage professional identity and growth, and importantly, enabling supervisees to feel nurtured and hopefully re-energised. Where appropriate, I draw on and share my own clinical and leadership knowledge and experience to support discussion and will signpost to alternative sources of support and learning when required.
